I just heard about this thing the day before yesterday, I don’t know anything about it or why they decided to do it. I know people are disappointed. Bleah.

But I still hope people buy Brian Q. Miller’s SMALLVILLE comic. I was thrilled when he told me in secret that Steph would…

I’ve always been of the mind that comic book fans can get incredibly impatient when it comes to popular/favorite characters. I was a big fan of Steph in Batgirl written by Miller, and I would love to see her back in some fashion sooner rather than later. But I think a little patience is needed. The New 52 isn’t a year old and there are still a ton of characters still on the sidelines.

If DC waits and gets her appearance right maybe she’ll have a good shot at long term success. I understand the frustration but its not like she’s dead and gone forever. This sort of thing happens to characters in comic books. This isn’t anything new right?

DC’s New Earth 2

Admittedly I was skeptical about DC’s Earth 2 news. I’m really enjoying a lot of the new 52 books and the idea of another Earth so soon seemed unappealing for some reason. But after letting the idea marinate for awhile and seeing some of those concept sketches I think it could be fun. After shrinking their universe down DC is slowly starting to expand again. Maybe characters fans have been begging to see will start appearing. I am planning to give the Huntress and Power Girl book a shot, that seems like a winning combination as far as team ups go. The Earth 2 stories could bring some unique twists on the usual DC characters. The differences between the two universes hopefully will be fun.

I also liked the reveal in the back of last week’s Justice League concerning Pandora. She’s the mystery character that’s been in the background of the DC books. That teaser was quite interesting because it hints at just how the new DC Universe came to be and that she’s responsible. It also seems to create a door if DC ever wants to reverse these changes they’ve made. But every story can be reversed right?

2012 should be exciting for DC readers. There are a lot of fun stories coming, Night of Owls!, and more reveals about the DCU as a whole should be really fun. I have a feeling tiny threads connecting all these stories are being made. I can’t wait to see what’s ahead.

So it’s not definite, the list only maybes. But none of the books I’m reading are on the list. Initially that makes me happy, but who’s to say what can get canceled or not. Looking at the list none of them surprise me. Personally I figured most of those books would have a hard time catching on, even if they are really good.

Any of your books on the list?

Pandora New 52 appearances

Went back and looked through all the debut issues I have and the Pandora character was in most of them just standing there like Waldo. I couldn’t find her in Batgirl, JL Dark, Supergirl and Justice League though.

Comments

According to the DC blog her name is Pandora. The link will send you to a cool teaser image. Apparently I don’t pay much attention to my comics because she was in all the debut issues and I don’t remember seeing her. I have to go back and read them.

This is why I’m terrible at Where’s Waldo and other picture search games. Anyway Pandora obviously reminds me of the story from Greek myth about Pandora’s box and when opened unleashed all sorts of nastiness and terrible things upon the world.

I doubt that’s the case here but you never know right? Maybe DC has some big plans for the summer. Although it seems a little early for an event since the comics are still young? Some haven’t completed their first story arcs yet. I’d be fine if the stories just kept on rolling through summer without a big story.

It will be interesting to see the moves DC starts making in March and April.

Some Random Thoughts

  • I’d like to see Batwoman make her animated debut. Perhaps an animated Elegy direct to blu-ray?
  • I’ve decided to drop Astonishing X-Men.
  • I really want to read the next issues of Mouse Guard and Lady Mechanika.
  • I’m going to start collecting action figures and busts.
  • I’m seeing way to much spoiler-ish images/videos of the Avengers and the Dark Knight Rises online. It’s getting harder to avoid.
  • I don’t understand all the online dislike of DC’s New 52 changes. Yeah I’m a little upset some books got canned, but DC is offering some great stuff right now. They had to do something anyway. I wouldn’t want them to settle for mediocre books.
  • When will the DC characters start appearing/get mentioned in other titles? (Justice League titles aside)
  • So does is Jean Grey returning next year or is it just the Phoenix Force? Marvel says it will be looking for a new host. But haven’t those two always gone hand in hand?
  • If Jean does return what does it mean for Scott and Emma? Does she go to San Francisco or New York?

glunders:

The first wave of New 52 #4s rolled out today, and while I’m practically writhing with anticipation when it comes to Animal Man, Swamp Thing, and Action Comics, I can’t quite say the same of some of the other books I picked up: Batwing and Justice League International.

(So why did I buy…

I’ve noticed some of the titles are moving at different paces myself. Books like Batwing, Supergirl, JL Dark, All Star Western, and Swamp Thing jumped right into the action. Those were exciting starts that I could see new readers getting hooked to.

Others seem to be taking a slower approach and building up to something. Batgirl is a title that comes to mind. Yes it has been full of action but I think you see Simone is spending some time on Barb and her development and coming out of the wheelchair. JLI is another that feels like a classic comic book story in that you have bits and pieces of the big picture revealed issue by issue.

Maybe this is the writers discretion or an editorial thing, but either it’s working. I think the books I’ve been reading have been successful. Perhaps a little patience will be needed for some of the titles.

My New 52 Top 10

I posted yesterday the books I got and which one’s I’ll be keeping. So I figured I’d share which ones were my top 10 favorites.

  1. Batwoman
  2. Wonder Woman
  3. Batman
  4. Action Comics
  5. Justice League Dark
  6. Swamp Thing
  7. Batwing
  8. All Star Western
  9. Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.
  10. Supergirl

The wait for Batwoman has been very long and her debut was worth it. Finally glad to see Wonder Woman get a well deserved start. All Star Western, Frankenstein, and Supergirl both started off strong. Justice League Dark and Swamp Thing offered some nice creepiness and variety. Batwing, Batman, and Action were all very strong.

These are also books I’d also recommend to anyone looking to jump into the new DC Universe. Of course there are others that I didn’t pick up that had equally good debuts so I’d also suggest doing a bit of browsing on what DC is offering.

DC Comics New 52 Month 1

Well the first month is in the books and it appears DC has seen success with some titles. Quite a few got some good reviews while others weren’t so good and  others managed to stir up quite a fuss. I expected to DC to make some missteps and even something controversial stuff but they upset a lot of people with Catwoman and Red Hood and the Outlaws in particular. Anyhoo here’s what I got and whether I’m keeping it.

I’m going to keep the following books as long as they stay interesting:

  • Justice League
  • Justice League International
  • Justice League Dark
  • Action Comics
  • Batman
  • Batwoman
  • Batwing
  • Batgirl
  • Swamp Thing
  • All Star Western
  • Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E.
  • Green Lantern
  • Wonder Woman
  • Supergirl
  • Catwoman

These are ones I’m reading the first story arc then making a decision:

  • Nightwing
  • Demon Knights
  • Red Lanterns

And finally books I gave a shot and didn’t really find entertaining:

  • Men of War
  • Red Hood and the Outlaws

I know I didn’t read a lot of titles, but these were the ones I was mainly interested in. All Star Western, Batwing, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and Frankenstein were nice surprises. I’m also aware that I probably am missing out on a lot of other good stuff, but there also my wallet to think about. And who knows what DC is planning to launch in 2012… Secret Six please! And maybe a team up buddy book with Steph and Cass (which sounds pretty awesome now that I think about it).

CBR got some people to sit down and read some of the new 52 books and got their opinions on it. I really enjoy these because it gives an idea of what the new readers may think of the title. Of course DC wants the dedicated fans to stick around, but this whole thing was done with attracting new readers in mind. It seems successful but I wonder if it will be harder to keep them interested once you got their attention?

More importantly in a tough economy how many are willing to spend the money on comic books? It’s said that entertainment and leisure is usually the first to get cut from a person’s budget. It’ll be interesting to watch the numbers going in 2012.

Well it appears all of the 52 new books have sold out at the distributor level and all of them will go into 2nd printings. However, there still could be titles available at local comic shops. I’d imagine DC is thrilled with this news as it potentially reflects books in the hands of a lot of new readers.

Also they listed books that ordered over 100,000 copies. I’m surprised Batwoman did not make that list, but I suspect it’ll get there once people pick up on how awesome that book is.

A few titles have hit 3rd and 4th printings and I bet a lot more will reach that mark. I’m glad to see that this has been working for DC. They needed the boost and so did the comic industry.

New 52 Week 3

Nearly forgot about doing these posts but better late than never right? Here’s the list for the new books on shelves this week. There are some big ones too. From the internet sites I frequent it would seem DC’s efforts have been successful. I think there are some bumps in the road as far as some of the books are concerned, but that’s to be expected. I wasn’t expecting this relaunch to be perfect and I won’t be surprised if/when a book or two is canceled. Here’s week 3.

Batman is pretty much a guaranteed success right? I mean it’s Batman. I’m a big fan of Scott Snyder who is writing the book and very talented. I’m expecting a great story. This is probably a must buy book.

Birds of Prey has seen some big changes from the original book. I was reading the Simone title before the relaunch and it was losing my interest. So I don’t know if I want to check this out. Some recent solicitations hint at a big and early shake up for the book though. Maybe this is one to watch.

Blue Beetle is a book I can’t comment much about. I do know the character has been quite popular recently and had a solo book before the relaunch that was canceled. Maybe it works this time around

Captain Atom all my knowledge about Captain Atom comes from the Justice League Unlimited cartoon. He had some pretty good appearance in that show. Based on his powers this could be an interesting book for new comers and old fans alike. This is a book I’ll skip.

Catwoman this is another book I’ve been eagerly awaiting. I enjoy Winick’s writing and March’s cheesecake style is always fun to look at. Selina has had a successful solo before, but I wasn’t reading it at the time. Maybe current buzz around Anne Hathaway and her Selina Kyle role in the next Batman movie will bring in some new readers.

DC Universe Presents The solicitation says that this will spotlight some of DC’s most exciting heroes. The initial story arc features Deadman who is a cool character and seen a boost in popularity after Brightest Day. I’m not planning to get this, but maybe casual readers will find the changing featured hero interesting.

Green Lantern Corps Seems like this book will feature more traditional GL stories. Lots of space cop action and what not. Green Lantern has a story featuring Sinestro and Hal that seems to be happening outside the regular GL happenings.

Legion of Super Heroes The heroes from the future that I know very little about! Never was big into Legion stories, but they’ve been around for awhile and I’m sure the fans will pick this up.

Nightwing Dick is back in the Nightwing role and I can’t remember if I added this to my pull list or not. Anyway Dick is a cool character as Batman or Nightwing and I think I’ll check this out. Nightwing has his cult followers right? He’s by no means an obscure character.

Red Hood and The Outlaws I’ll be honest I want to read this book because I love Kenneth Rocafort’s art. It’s so energetic and dynamic. The main characters are pretty cool, but never a huge fan of them. I don’t know if Rocafort is leaving after the first arc or what, but maybe this book will be good enough to stick with.

Supergirl has a solicitation that just sounds interesting. I read her solo a long time ago but dropped it when the story quality went down severely. I think it was about the time she donned a headband in one issue. Anyway this could be a fun title.

Wonder Woman a new number 1 after I don’t know how many relaunches and reboots. The recent Odyssey story arc was interesting. It had some bright spots, but was far from perfect. In fact I think Wonder Woman is one the characters that can benefit the most from the relaunch. A fresh start for Diana could be big and maybe lead to more success for her in other forms of media. Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang are immensely talented. I’m not sure if they are the ongoing creators but Diana should be getting a strong start. Hopefully this is the start of some stability for Wonder Woman.

New 52 Quick Hits

Just some swift opinions of some new 52 books I picked up this week. Not sure if I will stick with all of them in the long run but for the most part they were all good first starts.

Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E was a good start. I really like the idea of a team of monsters saving the world from even more monstrous threats. There are a couple new faces that pop up in this that weren’t in the Flashpoint mini. There’s a nice mystery that starts this story off too. I’m really interested to see further interaction between the team members as well.  The art can get a little weird in some places with indistinct faces and proportion issues, but for the most part it holds up. I think I’ll stick with this.

Men of War came out last week but my shop didn’t get it until Friday. I picked it up this week and it thought it was a bad ass war comic. It has all the military lingo and action you’d expect. There is mystery superhero that appears to be Superman but it’s never revealed exactly who. I like the Sgt. Rock legacy that continues here and it is a rough promotion. The art is serviceable. There are a lot of dark and dimmed scenes that reflect that warzone atmosphere. Don’t know if war comics are for me though. I’m not sure if I want to continue reading.

Demon Knights was quite an interesting read. I really didn’t know what to expect going into this and I guess that works in DC’S favor. It’s definitely filled with magic, mysticism, and fantasy. I dig all 3 of those elements as long as it doesn’t become too convoluted and that isn’t the case here so far. This issue mainly seems to be a lot of introductions of the characters who will be playing major roles in the story. My initial impression is that a group of heroes will be formed in the past to protect it from bad guys in the dark/medieval era. The art I felt was really strong. The period is captured nicely with clothing, weapons, and surroundings. It’s also appropriate that the battle scenes are particularly bloody. I was originally not planning to get this book, but it was a nice surprise.

Green Lantern has been popular for several years now and rightfully so. Geoff really knows his stuff, but this issue pretty much picks up where War of the Green Lanterns left off. Sinestro has been chosen to replace Hal and this could be some of the best GL stories in a while. Sinestro is a great villain but it’s been hard to hate him lately. It’s a perfect time for him to take the spotlight in the book. Old GL fans will appreciate what Johns is doing here. I really want to see how Sinestro handles his Sinestro Corps now that he’s a Green Lantern again. Doug Mahnke is at his best as usual. He’s really great at faces and capturing emotions. GL gets new life in the new DC Universe.

The question I’ve wondered about since DC started releasing the new books is what would new readers think of the books and more importantly would they be interested in reading more. Well it’s as if the folks over at Newsarama read my mind because they gave some of the new issues to folks who had not been seriously into comic culture for some time and asked them what they thought and if they would read more. While this initial post by Newsarama is a small sampling I was surprised at the responses.

T-Minus whatever till Batwoman #1

These are some cool spreads pulled from the Rucka and Williams Detective Comics run.

If Batwing was my most anticipated book from the new 52 this is definitely my 2nd most anticipated. It’s been a long wait for this book and an amazing story by Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams in Detective Comics awhile back made me want this solo book like I want a championship Redskins team. I can’t remember the last time I was excited about a character for as long as I have been about Batwoman aka Kate Kane. If there’s one book you get tomorrow I recommend this one. It should be awesome.
